6 Mistakes Homeowners Make When Painting Exteriors

First and foremost, it is okay not to know what you’re doing. That is the time that you either do the research and make sure you’ve got a handle on things, or you call in a professional. If you’re set on doing it yourself, that’s great! We are here to help you know exactly what you need to be aware of before you start a painting project. Here are 6 common mistakes homeowners make when they paint their exterior themselves.

Not cleaning or prepping in the beginning

It is so important that the surface you are ready to paint is also ready for you. Make sure that all old paint chipping is sanded, mold is removed, and any other repairs or cleaning that the house needs are completed prior to beginning to paint.

Painting during the hottest part of the day

Sometimes life just gets busy, and you have to squeeze things in whenever you can. However, when it comes to a painting project, if you must paint in the middle of a hot day, make sure you are at least painting in the shade. Not only can the sun cause damage to the paint you are working with over time, it can also prevent the paint from adhering to your surface properly.

Using the wrong sheen

You want to use a sheen that is as non-reflective as possible, but not necessarily matte. Matte doesn’t allow outdoor surfaces to breathe. Using a satin or an eggshell sheen is the safest bet for the best outcome.

Not using a paintbrush

We all know that rollers get the job done more quickly than brushes. However, it is better to use a brush and spend a little extra time so that you can focus on the details of the paint job.

Not asking for help

We understand that you may want to be able to finish, step back, and say, “I did that.” But sometimes it just comes down to needing the help of a professional. And if you don’t want to take it that far, you can at least invite a few friends over and make it fun. Many hands make light work, as they say.
