Five Signs Your Exterior Needs a New Paint Job

Just as it’s important to maintain your lawn, it’s important to maintain your home exterior. A coat of paint goes a long way when fixing up your house; it makes it look clean, polished, and well-cared for. Not only does a fresh paint job make your house look better, but it can protect your exterior walls from weathering and insects.

The sad truth is that at some point paint begins to break down under the wear and tear of the outdoors. It’s a good idea to be able to identify when this happens so you can begin repainting. Here are five signs that it’s time to get a new paint job quick.

Markings

A small issue you may notice on your exterior walls include markings on your wood or vinyl. Whether that be scuffs or stains, markings can make your home look aged and battered. Some of these markings might be easily removed with a pressure washer but sometimes the only way to fix it is to repaint.

Flaking

Perhaps even more obvious than small scuffs is when loose paint itself starts to bubble, crack, and fall off. These defects are generally caused by moisture, wind, and excessive sunlight. Fortunately, it takes a long time for mother nature to break down quality paint! Even so, after years and years of the same coat you may find that it's time to repaint when your exterior walls are flaking.

Fading

This may be one of the more subtle signs, but after a while you may find your buttercup yellow is looking a lot more like buttercream. After years of exposure to harsh sunlight, even the toughest paint can begin to bleach out. Just try holding up an old color swatch of your paint to your exterior wall; the difference can be unbelievable!

Molding

Gross! Mold is definitely the most disgusting type of paint damage but it can still happen if you’re not careful. Excessive water from plumbing or humidity can damage the paint and cause it to bubble and rot-- especially on flat services like window sills. Mold can happen on both the siding and the trim so make sure to watch for it everywhere. It’s important to keep an eye out for problems like these so you can call a professional painter as soon as possible.

Chalking

What is chalking? It means exactly what it sounds like; old paint can start to weather away in the form of a chalk-like powder. You may not see it immediately but you can definitely feel it! Try rubbing your hand down the side of your wall. If your hand comes away dusty there's a big chance your paint is starting to chalk.
