Get the Right Paint Every Time! Professional Guide to Paint Finishes
When you’re thinking about repainting your interior walls, you’re probably most concerned with deciding what color to paint them. We know how it is -- you go to the nearest paint store and bring home swatch after swatch of different shades of beige. But there is one other major decision you have to make when deciding to paint your home — picking a paint finish.
If you aren’t familiar with the difference between eggshell and matte -- not to worry. We’ve made a comprehensive guide to various paint finishes just for you!
Glossy Finishes
Glossy finishes are simply paint finishes that are incredibly shiny and even reflective. Glossy finishes include high-gloss and semi-gloss finishes. As the names suggest, a high-gloss finish is substantially more glossy than a semi-gloss finish. Because glossy finishes are so eye-catching, they are best used in small amounts to highlight trim, accent walls, and doors.
Soft Glow Finishes
Soft glow finishes are paint finishes that are a little less glossy than high-gloss or semi-gloss finishes. Some of these finishes include eggshell and satin. Eggshell finishes have a soft gleam whereas satin is slightly shinier. Both are easy to clean. Like high-gloss finishes, satin is best used in small amounts to highlight features like doorways and ceilings. Eggshell on the other hand, because it isn’t too bright-looking, can be used on almost any surface.
Flat Finishes
Flat finishes are paints that contain little-to-no gloss. Flat finishes are often referred to as either flat or matte finishes. Because flat finishes aren’t too luminous, they are incredibly versatile and can be used on most surfaces from bedroom walls to kitchen interiors.
