Preparation, Preparation, Preparation: Exterior Painting Hacks
We’ve all heard the famous line mostly shared by Realtors: “Location, location, location!” Well, when it comes to painting, the line is: “Preparation, preparation, preparation!” The beginning steps to get ready for painting are just as important if not more so than the actual painting itself. Let us guide you in how to properly prepare your home and yourself for the perfect exterior painting job!
Cleaning
When you think of cleaning, you’re probably picturing cleaning up after the project is complete, but in this instance, you would be wrong. Cleaning the exterior of your home is extremely important for proper adhesion and evenness of the paint application. Make sure to at least rinse the siding and let it dry completely before you begin your project.
Chipping
If your old coat of paint is chipping, peeling, or cracking, sand it down to create a solid surface. New paint on chipped paint will just become chipped paint again.
Covering
It is easy to forget what a mess painting can turn into. Be sure to cover any surfaces you don’t want to accidentally paint, like shrubbery, outdoor furniture, and your driveway. Use drop cloths and weigh them down so they remain in place and secure.
Repairs
Painting your home won’t do you any good if there are repairs that need to be made. If there is rotting wood or any other issues with the surface you are painting, make sure to have those fixed up before you begin painting to ensure a proper finish.
Priming
Pay attention to the paint that you choose, as many newer paints are a 2-in-1 with primer and paint. If you choose one without primer in the mix, make sure to prime the surface prior to painting. Many people skip this step, but it is just as important as all the others.
All you need to remember is one word: Preparation. You won’t regret the little bit of extra work in the beginning to end up with a beautifully refreshed home!
