5 Ways to Prep for a Spring Exterior Paint Job

5 Ways to Prep for a Spring Exterior Paint Job

If you are on the schedule to have your house painted in the spring, you may be wondering if there is anything you can do to prepare for when the painters show up. Well, it depends, but usually, there isn’t too much you have to do. Here are a few of the more common things we run into that you may want to take care of before we show up.

  1. Trim the Bushes

If you have bushes, trees, or ivy of any kind that are very close to your house and you have been meaning to trim them, we would recommend doing it before having us paint your home. It makes it easier because we can then maneuver our equipment like ladders and ourselves around them.

It also helps because the wall is often dirty and wet behind the plants so it will help to better apply the paint if a bush isn’t going to lean against the wall or drop needles and leaves into it.

  2. Consider an Exterminator

Do a walkaround of your home and look up at the trim, gutters, and shutters. Check for activity from bees flying around or holes where they may have burrowed into the wood. This is best during the warmest time of day since that’s when they are more lively. Also, bats could be living behind the shutters. Pay attention at night if you see any flying around.

  3. Take Down the Decor

This isn’t usually a huge issue but if you have things hanging on your home like signs, flags, or flowers in the windows, you may want to take them down. If they’re not easy to reach, we can always take them down for you.

This also goes for furniture on your porch or deck. You won’t have to worry about it until we are there, but you will also not want to park your vehicles close to the house in case we are spraying.

  4. Replace Rotten Wood and Shingles

If there are boards on your house that are rotting away, get them replaced before we show up. That way the new boards are already up and have begun getting weathered. This also helps to avoid being charged more if we have to come back and paint a few new boards after we have already completed your job.

  5. Pick Out Your Colors

If you know the colors you want to use ahead of time, that will obviously make the job run quicker. With that being said, we understand that it’s overwhelming and a big decision though.

If you know the direction you want to go, get some samples and put them on your house so that you can have a good idea before we arrive. If you have no idea, let us know and we can help provide some insight based on our experience.

Those are just a few things that we come across as we are working on exteriors. Usually, the issues are not too extreme and we can work around it but if you are able to get rid of the bees, trim the bushes and replace any rotten wood before the painters arrive, it will make the project run much smoother and quicker.
