Store and Score! 3 Ways to Expand Your Wall Paint’s Shelf Life

Have you ever wondered how to make your leftover cans of paint last longer? Maybe you want to retouch a room and you don’t want to buy a brand new paint can to get the job done every time.

Luckily, paint can be stored for years! You just have to do it the right way to ensure that it stays intact. Check out our advice to expand your wall paint’s shelf life below.

Store Leftovers

Don’t just save whole cans of paint. Remember that you can also pour your excess paint from any paint tray back into its respective paint can. If for some reason you do not have a paint can, you can pour your leftover paint in a glass jar. Glass jars are effective vessels because they can easily be sealed to keep out the air that makes paint go dry.

Signed and Sealed

Whenever you’re storing paint it's important to label your paint cans so you remember what shade you used on what. Try to be as specific as possible to help your future self out in deciphering the contents of your paint cans - particularly paints with similar colors. It’s also important to remember to only open paint cans with a paint can opener - anything else can damage or dent the air-tight lid causing the paint to dry prematurely. You can also keep paint from getting in and drying in the cracks of the paint lid by purchasing a can with a paint can spout.

Temperature and Humidity

Paint can be tricky. If it gets too cold, it could freeze. If it gets too warm, it could dry out. The humidity levels can also cause the paint to mold or dry out. Unless you live in a fairly temperate area, it’s wise to always keep paint indoors at regulated temperatures and humidity levels. Basements and heated garages are ideal for storage because it’s out of the way and is the perfect environment for an extended shelf life.

By following these steps, you can stretch your paint’s shelf-life by years! With proper storage, latex-based paint can last up to ten years!
